Comprehensive Planning: Building the Future of Douglas

City of Douglas News Posted on February 25, 2026

Comprehensive planning is vital for shaping the long-term vision of our communities. The Joint Comprehensive Plan for Coffee County, which includes the cities of Ambrose, Broxton, Douglas, and Nicholls, serves as a roadmap for sustainable growth and development. This plan sets long-range goals to create vibrant, resilient communities while fostering economic and social progress.

Required by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, the Joint Comprehensive Plan is updated every five years. It addresses key areas such as:

  • Transportation
  • Population and Housing
  • Land Use and Economic Development
  • Natural and Historic Resources
  • Community Facilities

The City of Douglas Mayor and City Commission adopted the current plan on September 25, 2023, and the next update is scheduled for 2028, however the plan is reviewed several times per year to evaluate progress on planned projects.  Most recently, the Mayor and Commission along with Department Heads reviewed the Short Term Work Plan at the Annual Strategic Retreat.

View the full plan at the Community Development Department’s Planner Office in City Hall (302 S. Madison Avenue) or online at: https://www.cityofdouglasga.gov.
