The City of Douglas would like to invite citizens of Douglas to participate in our Tire Amnesty Day, the monthly Community Junk Drop-Off Day and the Great American Cleanup. These events will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 8am-12:00pm.
Tire Amnesty Day will allow citizens of Douglas to dispose of up to 8 tires per resident at the City Pole Yard located on S. Pearl Avenue. Tires are a non-biodegradable, hazardous material that can damage our environment. Scrap tires that have been disposed of improperly or left in yards can become the breeding ground for mosquitoes and a habitat for snakes and other wild animals. No commercial and no farm tires will be accepted. Rubber only – no rims. Proof of residency is required.
“We are happy to offer these type of services to our citizens,” says Jacob Lott, Public Works Director. “In addition to cleaning up our neighborhoods, we are also saving our citizens money because we are offering these services for free and citizens will not have to pay a landfill fee.”
On Community Junk Drop-Off Day, a dumpster will be placed at the City Pole Yard to offer residents a way to dispose of large, non-hazardous items and electronic items at no cost. Acceptable brown and white good items include furniture, washing machines, refrigerators, dryers, stoves, microwaves, television, etc. Please drain all chemicals from appliances. This does not apply to hazardous chemicals such as paints/solvents, household cleaners, pesticides/herbicides, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, or tires. Proof of residency is required to drop off items at the designated location. This is for households in the City of Douglas. Please NO business or commercial dumping.
In addition to Tire Amnesty Day and Junk Drop Day, the Great American Cleanup will be observed on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 8:00am-12:00pm. Individuals, churches, clubs and organizations are invited sign up to participate and earn community service hours. Participants should arrive at the Public Works Department between 8 and 8:30am for registration. The Great American Cleanup up will begin at 8:30am and last until 12:00pm. Volunteers will be treated to a cook-out following the cleanup.
