[ARCHIVED] CITY ADDRESSES RUMORS OF ROUNDABOUT IN TOUCHTON WOODS SUBDIVISION

Several citizens have raised concerns about rumored City of Douglas plans to build a roundabout at Touchton Drive and Red Bird Drive intersection of Touchton subdivision. A roundabout is a type of circular intersection or junction in which road traffic flows almost continuously in one direction around a central island.

The City meet with GADOT two or three years ago regarding placing roundabouts in certain areas of Douglas as traffic calming devices. At that time, due to motorists using the Touchton Drive area as a “cut through” to and from Highway 32 to Bowens Mill Highway, Touchton Drive was an area that was considered for a roundabout. However, funds for these roundabouts were not available then and may not be available now.

“Recently, a few citizens have called about the increase traffic on Touchton Drive and motorists not stopping at the four way stop as well,” says City Manager Terrell Jacobs. “Staff provided the citizens some history on this issue, but we do not want citizens to think that we are moving forth with putting in roundabouts to address the problems on Touchton drive. Staff will consult with traffic engineers from GADOT to develop some options to address the concerns of speeding and not stopping at the four way stop as well.”

The City of Douglas is sorry for the confusion regarding the Touchton subdivision traffic issues. Once a plan is developed, property owners that would be impacted will be notified before recommendations are presented to the Mayor and Commission. If anyone should have any questions or concerns, please contact the City Manager’s Office at 912-389-3401.
