At the regular City Commission meeting on Monday, November 10, 2014, two Douglas Fire Department firefighters were honored. Firefighter John Cooper and Firefighter Robert Beecher each were presented with the Douglas Fire Departments’ Life Saving Award.
“On behalf of the City of Douglas and the Douglas Fire Department, I am honored to recognize the bravery of these two firemen,” says Mayor James Dennis. “Their actions and bravery reflect well upon themselves as well as the Douglas Fire Department.”
On Sunday, July 6, 2014 at 10:08 a.m., the Douglas Fire Department (DFD) responded to a structure fire on the second block of South College Avenue with an occupant inside the structure. Upon arrival, units of the DFD found heavy smokes and flames showing. Although there was extreme heat temperatures and low visibility within the structure, Firefighter Cooper and Firefighter Beecher made entry through a window utilizing a ground ladder. Within a short time, both firefighters reappeared at the entry window with the occupant and removed her from the hazardous environment. The occupant’s care was turned over to Coffee Regional Medical Center EMS, who transported the occupant to CRMC where she made a full recovery.
Firefighter Cooper and Firefighter Beecher were honored with the Life Saving Award by the City of Douglas Mayor and Commission and the Douglas Fire Department for their actions and bravery.
