[ARCHIVED] DOUGLAS CEMETERY HOSTS GRAVESITE ARCHAEOLOGICAL WORKSHOP

The City of Douglas Cemetery, Southeastern Horizons, Inc., and the Georgia Municipal Cemetery Association will host a workshop on Thursday, June 14, 9:00am, at Heritage Station Museum located at 219 W. Ward Street. The workshop will demonstrate the necessary investigation methods to determine whether or not a cemetery has unrecorded graves present.

“When I teamed with Southeastern Horizons, Inc. and conducted our gravesite investigations in the Douglas City Cemetery, I felt that other cemetery personnel could also benefit from having the knowledge to properly conduct these investigations,” says Henry Milhollin, Douglas Cemetery Coordinator. “Properly investigating and identifying graves in cemeteries is very crucial in recording cemetery history and I am happy to offer this workshop to other Cemetery personnel with the help of Southeastern Horizons, Inc. and the Georgia Municipal Cemetery Association.”

Along with offering the necessary investigative methods, the workshop will also inform participants of the Georgia laws that govern this type of investigation and provide information from the case study that was conducted at Douglas Cemetery in the historic African American section.
