The Douglas Police Department is continuing its efforts to improve citizen communication with officers throughout neighborhoods in Douglas. Citizens are invited to join local police officers for National “Coffee With A Cop” Day on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, 9am-11am, at Bobby’s Treat Shop, located at 201 W. Ward Street. National Coffee with a Cop Day brings men and women in uniform together with communities to connect over a cup of joe.
“This is our third Coffee With A Cop and we hope that citizens will take the time to meet and have conversations about community and neighborhood issues or simply come out and get to know our officers,” says Douglas Police Chief Shane Edmisten. “By hosting these types of events, we hope to open the doors for positive interactions with police officers.”
Community policing has long been considered a framework for establishing trust between the community and the police. The first Coffee with A Cop was launched in Hawthorne, California in 2011 when Officers from the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day. Coffee with a Cop events are now held in all 50 states and is one of the most successful community oriented policing programs across the country.
