[ARCHIVED] 63rd WWII Flight Training Detachment Airbase Open House Saturday, October 22, 2016, 10am – 2pm

The Airbase Preservation Committee is happy to announce an Airbase Open House will be held on Saturday, October 22 from 10am – 2pm. Tours of the Airbase and WWII Flight Training Museum will be offered FREE of charge to the public. Committee members will be on hand selling limited edition “Airbase Scenes” metallic art prints by Dylan Ross and selling WWII Flight Training Museum t-shirts, WWII Museum patches, and taking orders for flight jackets.

“We are happy to offer the opportunity for the public to come out and tour this historic Airbase,” says Georgia Henderson, City of Douglas Public Information Director and Airbase Committee Member. “We hope by hosting this Open House, the public will become more aware of the need to preserve this historic airbase of Georgia.”

During World War II, the Airbase was home to an estimated 7,000 cadets who graduated from this primary flight training school and continue to serve as pilots during the war. In Dec. 1944, the base was decommissioned and returned as a civilian complex to the City of Douglas. Over the years, the airbase has been used for multiple purposes from a spring baseball training site to school housing to government office space. The WWII 63rd AAF-FTD Flight Training Museum is occupied on the grounds of the Airbase and the Douglas-Coffee County Veterans Park.
