On, Monday, January 20, several community members participated in a “day on, not a day off” community service project at the Fales Cemetery located in the Satilla/Green Acres community. Over the past four years, volunteers from the City of Douglas and Coffee County have celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday by giving back to their community. Volunteers donate their time to clean, map and document neglected cemeteries in Douglas and Coffee County.
This year, volunteers from the City of Douglas, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, City of Ambrose, VFW Post 5976, American Legion Post 18, Woodmen of the World, American Legion Post 515 including the Ladies Auxillary, spent their day off in the Green Acres community at Fales Cemetery. Fales Cemetery dates back to the mid 1800s and was in need of basic cleanup maintenance. Volunteers cleared brush, removed trash, and mapped/photo documented the marked graves. Information gathered from the mapping/photographing will be posted on the Find-A-Grave website for people to locate relatives, friends and family members that have been buried at Fales Cemetery. Also, the Day On Volunteers helped to make the cemetery more accessible to friends and family members visiting.
Special thanks to volunteers: Mayor of Ambrose - Henry Milhollin, Hunter Milhollin, Arnold Parsons, Mayor of Douglas – James H.
